"The Power of Words"

Pastor Heather Nysewander

James 3:1-12
New Revised Standard Version

Taming the Tongue

3 Not many of you should become teachers, my brothers and sisters,[External link opens in new tab or windowa] for you know that we who teach will be judged with greater strictness. 2 For all of us make many mistakes. Anyone who makes no mistakes in speaking is perfect, able to keep the whole body in check with a bridle. 3 If we put bits into the mouths of horses to make them obey us, we guide their whole bodies. 4 Or look at ships: though they are so large that it takes strong winds to drive them, yet they are guided by a very small rudder wherever the will of the pilot directs. 5 So also the tongue is a small member, yet it boasts of great exploits.

How great a forest is set ablaze by a small fire! 6 And the tongue is a fire. The tongue is placed among our members as a world of iniquity; it stains the whole body, sets on fire the cycle of nature,[External link opens in new tab or windowb] and is itself set on fire by hell.[External link opens in new tab or windowc] 7 For every species of beast and bird, of reptile and sea creature, can be tamed and has been tamed by the human species, 8 but no one can tame the tongue—a restless evil, full of deadly poison. 9 With it we bless the Lord and Father, and with it we curse those who are made in the likeness of God. 10 From the same mouth come blessing and cursing. My brothers and sisters,[External link opens in new tab or windowd] this ought not to be so. 11 Does a spring pour forth from the same opening both fresh and brackish water? 12 Can a fig tree, my brothers and sisters,[External link opens in new tab or windowe] yield olives, or a grapevine figs? No more can salt water yield fresh.

How Firm A Foundation (Foundation)

Verse 1

How firm a foundation ye saints of the Lord

Is laid for your faith in His excellent word

What more can He say than to you He hath said

To you who for refuge to Jesus have fled

Verse 2

Fear not I am with thee O be not dismayed

For I am thy God I will still give thee aid

I'll strengthen thee help thee

And cause thee to stand

Upheld by My gracious omnipotent hand

Verse 3

In every condition in sickness in health

In poverty's vale or abounding in wealth

At home and abroad on the land on the sea

As thy days may demand shall thy strength ever be

Verse 4

When through the deep waters He calls thee to go

The rivers of grief shall not thee overflow

For He will be with thee in trouble to bless

And sanctify to thee thy deepest distress

Verse 5

When through fiery trials thy pathway shall lie

My grace all-sufficient shall be thy supply

The flames shall not hurt thee I only design

Thy dross to consume and thy gold to refine

Verse 6

The soul that on Jesus hath leaned for repose

I will not I will not desert to its foes

That soul though all hell should endeavor to shake

I'll never no never no never forsake

I Will Call Upon The Lord

I will call upon the Lord (ECHO)

Who is worthy to be praised (ECHO)

So shall I be saved from my enemies (ECHO)

I will call upon the Lord

The Lord liveth

And blessed be my Rock

Let the God of my salvation be exalted

The Gift Of Love

Verse 1

Though I may speak with bravest fire

And have the gift to all inspire

And have not love my words are vain

As sounding brass and hopeless gain

Verse 2

Though I may give all I possess

And striving so my love profess

But not be given by love within

The profit soon turns strangely thin

Verse 3

Come Spirit come our hearts control

Our spirits long to be made whole

Let inward love guide every deed

By this we worship and are freed

Unbroken Praise

Verse 1

Praise unbroken, Praise unending

Be Yours be Yours forevermore

Praise untainted, Praise unfading

Be Yours be Yours forevermore

Be Yours be Yours forevermore

Unbroken praise be Yours God forever

All my praise be Yours God forever

Lord take this life let it become Your throne

Unbroken praise be Yours

Verse 2

My surrender, My devotion

Be Yours be Yours forevermore

Be Yours be Yours forevermore

So let my deeds outrun my words

And let my life outweigh my songs

(Unbroken praise be Yours)

Unbroken praise be Yours

My unbroken praise be Yours

In The Garden

And He walks with me

And He talks with me

And He tells me I am His own

And the joy we share as we tarry there

None other has ever known

Verse 1

I come to the garden alone

While the dew is still on the roses

And the voice I hear falling on my ear

The Son of God discloses

Verse 2

He speaks and the sound of His voice

Is so sweet the birds hush their singing

And the melody that He gave to me

Within my heart is ringing

Verse 3

I'd stay in the garden with Him

Tho' the night around me be falling

But He bids me go thro' the voice of woe

His voice to me is calling

Praise God From Whom All Blessings Flow (Old 100th)

Praise God from whom all blessings flow

Praise Him all creatures here below

Praise Him above ye heavenly host

Praise Father Son and Holy Ghost
